BUILDING HR OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE AS A CAPABILITY

In this blog, I want to share how an organisation can go about in building an efficient HR Operational Excellence Function. From the initial concept to a sustaining model , there are 6 stages. It may take about 2-3 years to build an efficient and sustainable function delivering high value.

Let's look at the different stages

1. UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS
Let's start with understanding what is Operational excellence and what it means in the context of Human Resources Function.

2. BUILDING THE FOUNDATION
Understanding more about the as-is processes, services, people and policies within your organisation is important and not all organisation will have the required documentation for that. So this phase is about 'building the foundation' for HR OpEx, an opportunity to create a common language about processes within your organisation and also to spread the word of operational excellence and the benefits of it. Lets look at what is important at this stage

3. TRANSLATING THE STRATEGY
Next step is about connecting your HR strategy to the goals of HR operational excellence strategy

 10. HR Strategy and Priority Periodic Reviews

4. IDENTIFYING & DELIVERING THE KEY INITIATIVES
Understand where you stand and what needs to be improved in the context of KPI and processes is important to come up with the right idea and select the right initiatives to achieve operational excellence

  13. Delivery and Control to ensure right governance and benefit realisation

5. GOVERNING & SUSTAINING A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT MINDSET
Once you have the key initiatives identified, then it is about embedding a data driven continuous improvement culture with clear governance and monitoring to drive initiatives to improve KPIs

6. RAISING THE BAR
Taking the capabilities to the next level and improving maturity would be the key for sustaining and constantly striving for excellence. There will be new strategy as the organisation evolve and that means you will have to review priorities when you have new strategy/ new leadership team

Technology plays a key role in driving operational excellence, with the boom in AI, RPA, Chatbot and Blockchain innovators in the HCM market, it is important to look at how technology can be utilised to drive efficiency.
